Team FALCONS is an eight-member university engineering group from Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi in Türkiye, dedicated to pushing the boundaries of aerospace technology. Composed of one advisor and seven student members, the team operates through highly organized, specialized subsystems spanning mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. Driven by a commitment to domestic production and hands-on innovation, the team manages the entire development lifecycle in-house. This comprehensive approach includes structurally simulating the airframe, manufacturing physical components using a custom-built CNC foam cutter, and engineering proprietary electronic systems like a bespoke Power Distribution Board (PDB) and Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT).
The AF-1 UAV is an innovative, solar-assisted fixed-wing aircraft designed for autonomous, long-endurance environmental monitoring and early wildfire detection. Featuring a 5-meter wingspan and an optimized takeoff weight of approximately 8 kg, the glider-style UAV leverages integrated solar arrays to harvest energy in-flight. By utilizing a custom MPPT system, the aircraft generates more power than it consumes during peak sun hours, demonstrating the operational feasibility of perpetual flight. To maximize endurance and minimize payload weight, the platform employs a unique hybrid software architecture. Instead of relying on heavy onboard computers, the UAV streams live telemetry and video footage to a ground-based Virtual Private Server (VPS), where proprietary AI algorithms process the imagery in real-time to instantly detect and locate environmental anomalies.
